The Challenge

At the end of 2013, the data transmission at the company's 20 German warehouses was implemented as "island solutions", and secure data roaming was often not possible inside the warehouses. In addition, there was no transparency with regard to WLAN performance and security. The client wanted each site to be equipped with three independent wireless networks: An MDE system for shipment movements at the forwarding interfaces, a guest access (HotSpot), and access for employees with laptops/smartphones. Its Cologne IT department was to manage centrally all networks in the German warehouses, including connected offices.

Project Challenges

  • Providing unified WLAN administration
  • Ensuring secure roaming, increasing wireless security
  • Implementation of 3 WLANs per site: MDE WLAN, guest access (HotSpot), access for employees with laptops (independent of the WLAN)

The Solution

The achievable WLAN performance data were determined with the help of radio measurement and analysis. Existing WLAN controllers were reconfigured and radio cell coverage, operating security and roaming of the access points in the warehouses were finely tuned. If economically expedient, existing WLAN hardware was replaced by new, more powerful components. Security was enhanced by introducing the latest WPA2 encryption at all sites.

The WLAN overhaul was implemented step-by-step in all Emons warehouses in Germany and was completed in only three months.

  • WLAN workshop / training for IT staff
  • Site survey, radio analysis and fault rate per site
  • WLAN overhaul for all 20 German locations
  • Service on demand (remote management)
  • Implementation period of 3 months

The Result

The optimized WLAN now ensures secure, transparent and productive workflows. The IT department can therefore focus on its strategic and operational core tasks. Employees have responded very positively to the implementation as performance barriers have been removed. MDE process and bar code detection are now synchronized in real time with the parent transportation management system (TMS): A gain in time and flexibility which has already led to new business. Emons suppliers and logistics service providers also benefit from accelerated processes in incoming or outgoing goods and shorter waiting times.

  • An average of 2% increased productivity per site
  • Increased security and transparency
  • Proactive process planning, real-time, paperless data management
  • Immediate information transfer for subsequent processing
  • Bundling of all online processes, ROI expected within ten months
The first step to your individual solution.
