The Challenge

In beverage logistics, labels from different manufacturers are typically affixed at different points on the pallet. To post incoming goods, the documents accompanying the pallet - usually three different barcodes - had to be scanned individually from the label. The scanning process with normal radio scanners was time-consuming - in practice, it was usually particularly difficult to precisely hit the middle of the three barcodes.

Project Challenges

  • Faster unloading of trucks
  • Speed up the scanning process
  • Security & transparency of goods movements

The Solution

An individual multiscan solution from ICS with Zebra scanners of the DS 36 series, consisting of an imager with extended range, is now being used. The extremely rugged 1D and 2D bar code scanner is perfect for use in harsh warehouse environments. The novel devices were specially developed for the simultaneous capture of several barcodes up to a distance of around 20 metres and individually configured by ICS for the Göttsche requirements - with optimum reading performance. With the new scanner, which is used wirelessly at Göttsche, the entire label is read with one scan and all information on it such as article, quantity, batch, best-before date or the number of the shipping unit (SSC) is automatically transferred to the warehouse management system.

Solution

  • Wireless Zebra Scanner DS 36 Series
  • Individual configuration on customer request
  • Multiscan process: 3 barcodes can be captured simultaneously
  • Transmission of the collected information to
    the warehouse management system

The Result

With the new solution, the truck unloading process could be significantly optimized and completed approximately 10 to 15 minutes faster. This results in a time saving of around 20 percent over an entire shift. "The forklift driver now scans the pallet barcodes much more conveniently and quickly," says Göttsche-project manager Andrea Wipprecht. "And thanks to the multiscan capability, we can capture up to three different barcodes with a single scan. According to our experience to date, this is 100 percent process-safe."

The Göttsche receives everything from a single source. Software and hardware solutions are optimally coordinated and contribute to a fast ROI.

Result

  • Time savings of around 20 percent per shift
  • 100 percent process reliability
  • Cost amortization within a few months
